Today, more than ever, we rely on data and intelligence when making our transport decisions. Growth in data creation and our ability to harness it will create a future transport system that will become smart, and eventually intelligent.
In the future the amount of data available will be more than we humans can comprehend which is why we will increasingly use technology to analyse and think for us, and help us plan. The transport system itself will become smart, and eventually intelligent - tailoring transport services to each individual and constantly reshaping itself to achieve better results. This will change the role of government and, how each of us uses the transport system.
That’s one possible vision of the future, and you may not agree with it. In fact, we want you to challenge these statements and ideas.
The visions and information on these futures pages are not presented as the views of industry or government policy. Rather, it is the Ministry of Transport’s intention for this work to stimulate wider debate and generate ideas on the possible future of New Zealand’s transport system.
