The Ministry of Transport assists outstanding New Zealand students to undertake research in fields that are deemed to be of importance to New Zealand’s transport sector.

To help invest in the right research activities and to develop research capacity and capability in the transport sector, the Ministry offers three (3) types of scholarships for students undertaking a thesis or dissertation as part of a Master’s programme.

Up to ten (10) scholarships in total will be offered in the 2019/20 financial year, ranging in value from $5,000 to $15,000.


The Targeted Research Scholarship supports students to research areas of immediate interest to the Ministry.

The Transport Evaluation Scholarship supports students to evaluate previous initiatives and/or means of evaluating future initiatives.

And the Transport Outcomes Scholarship supports students investigating topics related to any of the transport outcomes: Healthy & Safe People, Inclusive Access, Economic Prosperity, Environmental Sustainability, and Resilience & Security.
