A commitment to supporting future transport policy with high quality scientific advice has seen Professor Simon Kingham been appointed into the new role of Chief Science Adviser at the Ministry of Transport.

Canterbury University-based Professor Kingham’s expertise across a wide range of transport disciplines will support long-term transport planning and policy development.

The appointment of Professor Kingham is one part of a wider commitment by the Ministry as it works to improve collaboration and strategic leadership across the transport sector.      

Deputy Chief Executive, Strategy & Investment, Bryn Gandy, says, “This new Chief Science Adviser role will support the Ministry in developing and supporting an evidence-based approach to strategy and advice and ensure the Ministry uses the best scientific research in formulating policy.

 “Professor Kingham is highly regarded for his collaborative approach. His ability to provide a rigorous scientific perspective to the transport issues that we are looking at tackling will be of great value. I am looking forward to working with him in developing a safe and resilient transport system fit for New Zealand that supports communities, businesses and individuals.”
